The Amateur Kickboxing Association of Odisha (AKAO), popularly known as WAKO Odisha, is the officially recognized governing body for the sport of Kickboxing in the State of Odisha. Since its establishment in 2012, the Association has been dedicated to building a strong sporting ecosystem that nurtures talent, promotes discipline, and creates opportunities for athletes to compete at the highest levels.
What began as a modest initiative with a vision to introduce organized kickboxing across Odisha has today evolved into one of India's most progressive state associations. Guided by the belief that sporting excellence begins at the grassroots, WAKO Odisha has consistently worked to identify young talent from both urban and rural regions, providing equal opportunities for training, competition, and personal development.
Under the leadership of Mr. Kartika Dakua, Founder and President of WAKO Odisha and Vice President of the WAKO India Kickboxing Federation, the Association has witnessed remarkable growth over the past decade. With the support of dedicated coaches, referees, technical officials, district representatives, and volunteers, WAKO Odisha has built a transparent and athlete-centric system that continues to strengthen the sport across the State.
Recognized by the Odisha Olympic Association since 19 June 2015, and subsequently by the Department of Sports & Youth Services, Government of Odisha in 2023, the Association has earned the confidence of both the sporting fraternity and the Government through its consistent commitment to excellence. These recognitions have opened greater opportunities for Odisha's athletes, enabling eligible participants representing WAKO Odisha at National Championships to receive Government financial assistance, while medal-winning athletes have become eligible for Government cash incentives under the State's sports promotion schemes.
As the official State unit affiliated with the WAKO India Kickboxing Federation, WAKO Odisha proudly contributes to the national vision of developing kickboxing across India. Working in close coordination with WAKO India, the Association follows international standards laid down by the World Association of Kickboxing Organizations (WAKO), ensuring that athletes, coaches, referees, and officials receive quality technical education, fair competitive opportunities, and exposure to national and international platforms.
Over the years, WAKO Odisha has expanded its network to 21 affiliated District Associations, creating a strong grassroots structure that reaches every corner of the State. Through district championships, state championships, coaching camps, referee and judge certification programmes, technical seminars, belt grading examinations, and high-performance training camps, the Association continues to produce skilled athletes capable of competing at the national and international levels.
The performances of Odisha's athletes have been equally inspiring. Competitors representing the State have consistently secured medals at National Championships and have proudly represented India at various international events under the banner of the WAKO India Kickboxing Federation. Today, Odisha is consistently ranked among the Top Five performing States out of more than 30 affiliated State Associations under WAKO India—an achievement that reflects years of systematic athlete development and collective effort.
One of the most significant milestones in the Association's journey was the successful hosting of Odisha's first National Kickboxing Championship at KT Global School. The Championship welcomed athletes, coaches, referees, and officials from across India and received widespread appreciation for its technical excellence, professional management, hospitality, and world-class organization. The successful conduct of this prestigious event demonstrated Odisha's capability to host major national sporting competitions and further strengthened its reputation within the Indian kickboxing community.
Beyond athlete development, WAKO Odisha has also extended its expertise through specialized training programmes and collaborations with Government departments and institutions. Among these initiatives was a specialized self-defence and combat training programme conducted for personnel of the Odisha Forest Department, reflecting the confidence that Government institutions place in the Association's technical expertise and coaching standards.
Committed to modernizing sports administration, WAKO Odisha has also embraced digital governance through its official website and membership platform. The online system facilitates athlete registration, district affiliation, tournament information, rankings, official notifications, and organizational transparency, making the administration of the sport more efficient and accessible.
Beyond medals and championships, WAKO Odisha believes that sport is a powerful instrument for social development. Through fitness awareness programmes, educational initiatives, leadership development, community engagement, and technical education for coaches and officials, the Association continues to promote the core values of discipline, respect, integrity, perseverance, and healthy living.
Throughout its journey, WAKO Odisha has benefited from the continued guidance and encouragement of the WAKO India Kickboxing Federation. As the National Sports Federation for kickboxing in India, WAKO India has played a vital role in strengthening technical standards, athlete development, officiating, coaching education, and competition management across the country. The Association acknowledges the valuable support and leadership of Mr. Santosh Kumar Agrawal, President of the WAKO India Kickboxing Federation whose vision for developing kickboxing through strong governance, technical excellence, and nationwide grassroots expansion has inspired affiliated State Associations, including WAKO Odisha. Under his leadership, WAKO India has continued to elevate the standard of Indian kickboxing by promoting athlete welfare, coach and referee education, and opportunities for national and international participation.
Today's WAKO Odisha is a movement dedicated to developing athletes, empowering communities, and strengthening the sporting culture of Odisha. With a strong foundation, visionary leadership, and an ever-expanding network of district associations, coaches, officials, and athletes, the Association remains committed to taking Odisha to even greater heights on the National and International kickboxing stage.
The journey that began with a single spark in 2012 continues to inspire a new generation of athletes, proving that with dedication, unity, and vision, a dream can truly grow from a flame into a movement.
